The Cloud Will Crash
Here's what will crash in 2009: your computer. Whether that's a notebook, a netbook, a server, or a desktop it will crash sometime this year. Another thing that will crash in 2009: your power. And one more thing that will crash in 2009: your Internet connection.
So which of these three crashes are fatal? None, provided you've put your
data in the cloud. That's not to say they're not inconvenient, troublesome, or even traumatic to your business, but in most cases they won't be fatal. When your power goes out, it doesn't mean there's no more electricity. When your Internet connection sputters out, it doesn't mean the Internet has closed for business. And when your computer crashes it doesn't mean losing your customer records or sales records or accounting ledger -- unless you've been keeping that irreplaceable, invaluable data on the local drive of the machine that went belly up.
As with utilities, redundancy is the point of cloud computing, electricity doesn't exist in just one place and neither does your data in the clouds.
Momentary loss of cloud access is possible (even probable), but that's a different prospect than outright loss and seeing your data vanish like so much water vapor.
