Explore Alternative Internet Access
That T-1 may be steady as a rock, but using cable for your Internet pipeline can be less expensive and maybe even faster. There's a reason, of course, that your dedicated telco line is more expensive than a consumer-grade line: Your provider is (or should be) paying more attention to the condition of that line for you. Said differently, you have a certain guaranteed throughput rate on that line and are not sharing the overall bandwidth with your neighbors.
On the other hand, many cable providers offer performance significantly beyond what's delivered by the typical T-1. Companies like
Charter can deliver download speeds as fast as 16 Mbps, and
Verizon's FIOS at up to 20 Mbps. These are typically rated as residential services, and you need to check for any limitations imposed by the providers. But from a price/performance standpoint, you're likely to notice a positive difference in both your bill and your Internet access.
