Embrace The Off Switch
Most of us leave our computers running when we walk away from our desks at night, or even just for lunch. The typical argument is that booting up every time we come back takes too long, and the electricity used doesn't amount to much, particularly because the monitor automatically shuts down after a few minutes.
In fact, most monitors, particularly LCDs, continue to use power when blank or even turned off. The power brick that converts wall currents for use by the LCD is still drawing power; it doesn't know the monitor isn't in use. And the computer also is using power, just waiting for your finger to tickle the keyboard. For complete conservation, shut down the computer, and then switch off your surge protector to kill the power to the adapter.
