How CII Ranked The 500

Scores of data used to select the biggest
Issue date: Sept. 18, 1995

Data and rankings for the InformationWeek 500 were provided by Computer Intelligence InfoCorp. in La Jolla, Calif. CII is the leading source of fact-based information for the computer and communications industries.

CII ranked companies based on information in its U.S. Installation Database. Each month, the company's research specialists update the Installation Database by conducting more than 30,000 in-depth interviews wit h information technology buyers and managers in order to get specific information on installed and planned technology for specific sites.

To rank organizations for the IW 500, CII built a number of technology scores, or rating, criteria for each site. It first looked at the technologies--such as LANs, PCs, data center products, and communications--that a company had installed or planned to buy for each of its computer sites. For each of these technologies, products were weighted. For example, in LANs, a site would earn a higher score if there were multiple LANs present and if there were a high number of nodes.

Once the data for each of these technologies at all 135,000 CII-tracked locations was aggregated, the site received a score. The next step was to add up all the sites belonging to a corporation to provide an overall ranking. (For example, Texaco has as many as 50 different sites; each site has a score; all scores were added to come up with the overall company value).

The final value rankings are listed here .
