A Net Gain For Users

Vendors adapt apps to let customers take advantage of the Internet

By Tom Stein

lient-server software vendors Computer Associates, J.D. Edwards, and Marcam are rolling out releases of their enterprise applications that let users take advantage of the Internet.

Computer Associates' enterprise financial management group last week launched CA-Masterpiece 97, the latest release of its financial application suite. It includes a new business-oriented visual interface as well as full Java capabilities.

Abram Azagury, senior VP for the CA unit in Islandia, N.Y., says users now have the flexibility to perform accounting functions over the Web and operate the software in a visual manner. The CA-Masterpiece suite includes general ledger, accounts payable and receivable, inventory control, and purchasing modules and costs. Pricing is unavailable.

"With our many geographically dispersed facilities, performing financial reports via the Web will greatly increase productivity overall," says Bob Zitnay, financial controller of the William Carter Co., a Griffin, Ga., clothing company that uses Masterpiece.

Travis White, VP of product strategies at J.D. Edwards, says the Denver company's OneWorld B73.1 financial suite will also include full Java support, improved workflow, and additional functionality in its human resources and financial applications. It runs on Windows NT and is priced at $75,000 per module.

Says Delvin Fletcher, VP of IT at OSF Inc. in Toronto, "We've seen im- provements in the graphical user interface and in financial reporting." OSF, a maker of wood and steel fixtures for retail stores, plans to go live with OneWorld B73.1 in September.

Marcam is rolling out Protean 2.15, which relies on ActiveX components, rather than Java, to include E-commerce capabilities. Olin Thompson, a senior VP at Marcam in Newton, Mass., says data residing in Protean now can be formatted and published on the Internet or corporate intranet.
