NC Dominates Oracle8 Debut

By John Foley

O racle debuted its Oracle8 database-management system last week in a lavish production at New York's Radio City Music Hall. B ut Larry Ellison's pet project, the network computer, stole the show. In a 90-minute presentation, the Oracle chairman spent as much time talking about the benefits of NCs (low cost and ease of management) as he did on the new features in Oracle's database (scalability and object support).

Oracle unveiled a $4,995 "network in a box," complete with two NCs and a PC server, and announced availability of its NC Server software, which begins at $745 for five users. Wyse Technology Inc. in San Jose, Calif., says it plans to build NCs using Oracle's NC Desktop software.
