Novell Adds Network Services For Web

Internet-enhanced GroupWise ships

By Monua Janah with Justin Hibbard

I ovell last week unveiled two new services in its BorderManager line that speed and secure flows of information between networks. Next month, the company will announce that its Novell Directory Services will be available on Windows NT Server this fall.

At a news conference in New York, CEO Eric Schmidt said the products are proof of a commitment to deliver network services for intranets and the Internet. Also last week, Novell began shipping GroupWise 5.2, the latest version of its collaboration and messagin g software, with enhanced Web access and added Internet standard support.

With a fall ship date for NDS on NT, which originally was to ship at the end of this summer, Novell will quash speculation that the product wouldn't be available until early next year. It will go up against Active Directory, Microsoft's attempt to provide NT with a tightly integrated scalable directory. Active Directory will appear in the early version of NT 5.0 that ships this week.

Brad Hudelson, supervisor of network operating system support at an Amoco unit in Tulsa, Okla., is interested in implementing NDS on NT. "That would greatly reduce our administrative costs for NT," he says, "because we've got the NDS infrastructure already built." But Amoco, he adds, will take a look at Microsoft's directory as well.

The new BorderManager products are FirstCache and Authentication Service. The former is designed to speed access from a large intranet to the Web, permitting 4,000 connections per second. The latter authenticates u sers dialing into a network, based on user rights defined in NDS.

GroupWise 5.2 includes a gateway for Microsoft Mail and support for Internet mail standards, including SMTP/MIME, IMAP4, and POP3. The LDAP directory-access protocol is also supported. A feature called GroupWise WebAccess makes everything in the Universal Mailbox available via a browser, including E-mail, voice mail, faxes, calendar items, and attachments.
