We highlighted 12 important stories that occurred since the last time the IT industry converged in Las Vegas for the Comdex/Fall trade show. At first glance, these stories may seem to address vastly different subjects. Our Oct. 20 cover story, "The Lever of Knowledge," for example, explained how knowledge-management systems help companies "know what they know" by allowing end users to unlock and share da
ta in corporate databases, PC files, and even their own brains. Meanwhile, the June 16 cover story, "A Question Of Value," focused on the price/performance issues associated with Microsoft's Windows NT operating system. "Choice," our March 17 cover, examined the various desktop clients-from network computers to fully functional PCs-that users can choose from.
Below the surface, these 12 subjects share some common threads: technology, the pace of change, innovation, and business value. We thought these 12 articles were so important-and your feedback confirms it-that this retrospective was needed to help you review the past year. These pages chronicle a year of impressive growth and evolution-and put into perspective the many interrelated issues that IT professionals struggle with on a daily basis.
ear 2000, Windows NT pricing, Java, supply-chain management, desktop-computing choices, knowledge management. These are just a few of the issues that have consumed IT professionals' time and energy over the last 12 months. The good news: In every one of these areas, the industry has experienced an incredible amount of innovation this year. The bad news: The pace of change has been relentless and often overwhelming for even the most savvy IT users. But the survivors are managing this complexity and finding the biggest return on investment.
