A More Intelligent Unicenter

AI integration to let CA product predict system problems

By Caryn Gillooly

C omputer Associates has acquired artificial intelligence specialist AI Ware Inc. A primary goal of the deal is to add intelligence and predictive management to CA's Unicenter TNG software.

AI Ware, a privately held company in Beachwood, Ohio, has two main products-CAD/Chem and Process Advisor-which look at ingredients, process parameters, and properties of an organization's products to help improve those products and their designs.

Once the technology is applied to Unicenter, CA hopes to let customers study the 800 to 900 different types of statistics collected by the enterprise-management software to determine, for instance, whether a hard drive is about to fail, or to predict faults in enterprise applications such as SAP's R/3, Lotus Notes, or Microsoft Exchange. The goal is for Unicenter to identify a patter n from the statistics and learn, over time, problems that such a pattern causes, says Marc Sokol, senior VP of advanced technology at CA. Unicenter will then be able to send out alerts via E-mail or pager, or even directly to the help desk.

"We can already do root-cause analysis," Sokol says. "This can predict in advance with a high degree of certainty when things will fail."

Analysts say this type of enterprise-management feature will become invaluable. "These management products have huge historical databases of faults and traps, and there's a huge demand to control these things with a limited number of people," says Jonathan Eunice, an analyst at Illuminata Inc. "Any technology that can do data mining or add any kind of intelligent behavior is extremely worthwhile."

Sokol says CA customers won't see the first fruits of AI Ware technology integration for 12 to 18 months.

"This will give customers something to think about," says Yankee Group analyst Colin Mahony, "and it will definitely be a nother arrow in CA's quiver. But at this point, it won't make or break sales."

Financial terms of the acquisition weren't disclosed. AI Ware's customers include Pfizer, Procter & Gamble, Dow Corning, DuPont, and Ford Motor.
