The Nuts And Bolts Of Harley's New IT

  • 3,000 desktops will be upgraded to Windows 95 from 3.1.1 and to Microsoft Office 97 from Lotus SmartSuite by the end of this year; cc:Mail will be dropped for Microsoft Exchange by the end of next year

  • An intranet planned for next year will use the Microsoft's Internet Information Server Web server; Lotus Notes will be integrated with the intranet

  • An IP network using Cabletron switches for the LAN recently replaced shared token-ring, with decisions pending on frame relay and ATM; the WAN will be supported by ATM and AT&T services

  • The human resources-management system from PeopleSoft will replace existing Software 2000 systems; decision pending on new financials apps

  • A data warehouse system on the drawing board will support a customer-relationship-management application first, then warranty and financial apps

  • A supply-chain system under development includes: Manugistics running on Windows NT, supported by an Oracle database for about 50 users; Parametric's Pro-E CAD/CAM package for more than 5,000 users both within Harley-Davidson and among its suppliers; and Metaphase for product-data management
