  • W eb-based procurement continues to win business converts. Western Geophysical, a $1.4 billion seismic exploration services unit of Baker Hughes Inc., will disclose plans this week to move most of its several hundred million dollars in annual purchasing to the Web. Philips Electronics said last week it will move all of its purchases of nonproduction goods and services to the Web.

Western and its procurement software vendor, Intelisys Electronic Commerce LLC, will host about 175 suppliers near Western's Houston headquarters this week to begin training and conversion. Western hopes to have those suppliers selling online within 60 days, then extend the capability to an additional 200 vendors later this year.

The company's goal is to cut processing costs to less than $10 per transaction and pay for the system in six months, says David Durham, manager of purchasing. Western will use Intelisys' IEC-Enterprise purchasing application, which it has been testing with four suppliers for the past six months.

Philips will deploy the Operating Resource Management System from Ariba Technologies Inc. The Dutch electronics maker will integrate the intranet application with several enterprise resource planning systems. Philips wouldn't disclose any more details.

Online procurement has been embraced mostly by large companies, including Bristol-Myers Squibb, Chevron, Ford, General Electric, Pacific Gas & Electric, and United Technologies. But vendors are looking for a wider variety of customers. Intelisys last week launched Intelisys.com, a hosting service that lets small suppliers post catalogs and handles online orders for prices starting at $25 per month. Also, British Telecom said it will create a business-to-business online marketplace for nonproduction goods in the United Kingdom, using Commerce Chain Solution software from CommerceOne Inc.
