  • Midmarket companies that want to determine their desktop software usage and rights can now take advantage of a fixed-price service from Corporate Software & Technology Inc. Within weeks of purchasing the service, buyers get a report with recommendations on how to avoid copyright infringement to reduce risks of lawsuits, get a better return on software investments, and ensure Y2K compliance.

Ad hoc software procurement processes, rapid growth, new technology deployments, unchecked inventory procedures, and changes in vendors' licensing policies can lead to confusion about what an emerging enterprise legally owns and what it's actually using, says CS&T. Matthew Nordan, an analyst with Forrester Research, says while most companies aren't in danger of getting a visit from the "software police," running illegal versions of software "is an insidious problem, one you only find when you look for it."

Additionally, Pat O'Riordan, VP of CS&T's corporate sales division, says 76% of midsize companies may overspend on software because they fail to investigate licensing contracts with their vendors. "Those customers often have an opportunity to leverage new licensing programs but don't know enough about them," he says. CS&T's service will educate companies about existing licensing deals, and also work with publishers to design new agreements for firms using its service.

CS&T's service is priced at $10,000 for businesses with 500 PCs, or $15,000 for those with 1,000 PCs. For companies that want to train in-house people to manage software acquisitions and upgrades internally, CS&T will also offer a software assessment management workshop, which is included in the price.
