How The Study Was Done

InformationWeek Research, in conjunction with Business Week, fielded this study in April 1999 in support of the June 8-10 CMP eBusiness Conference and Expo in San Jose, Calif. The study examines how electronic business is transforming five industries in the networked economy, paying particular attention to return on investment and changes in organizational structure and business culture.

The study was conducted by telephone with a total of 375 business and IT executives drawn from both InformationWeek subscribers and Standard & Poors contact lists. The 250 IT executives in the study are personally involved in the planning, development, or management of their company's Web-based E-business applications. The 125 business executives are either personally involved or manage others who are planning, developing, or managing their company's Web-based E-business applications.

The 375 executives were sampled across five industries: health care; manufacturing (non-computer), information technology (hardware, software, and services), financial (including banking and insurance and financial services), and retail and travel.
