  • D igex Corp. last week unveiled enhanced security, backup, reporting, administration, and monitoring services as part of its Web-site and hosted-application offering in an effort to boost customer confidence in hosted-application services.

Digex's SmartSecurity service monitors security-information sites from security and IT vendors, newsgroups, and message boards. Digex will send E-mail notification to its customers when a security threat, such as a computer hacker, is detected and will work with vendors to find, test, and deploy a solution quickly. SmartBackup guarantees data recovery in four hours. Before Digex offered this service, customers were guaranteed data recovery in two days, says Bobby Patrick, Digex's VP of product marketing. The company backs up customer data at a remote location.

Digex standardized its Windows NT and Sun Solaris servers on WebTrends Corp.'s reporting software to offer its SmartReporting service. SmartReporting lets Digex users access Web-site activity logs to view what their customers are doing while on their Web sites. Another new service, called SmartMonitoring, alerts Digex to any performance problems with hardware, software, network, or monitoring technologies to let the company quickly respond to problems. SmartAdmin gives Digex increased network, software, and hardware administration capabilities.

Phil Anderson, lead analyst at American Multi-Cinema Inc., has already taken advantage of Digex's services. Digex hosts, monitors, and maintains AMC's Web site. The new SmartSecurity service is of special importance to AMC, Anderson says. "This service relieves a lot of headaches because I don't have to track down security problems."

Digex customers will receive the enhanced services at no charge. The additional services are included in new customer packages.
