  • Arizona counties, cities, school districts, and state universities hope to reduce IT costs and provide uniform services to more than 35,000 users through a deal that the Arizona Government Information Technology Agency signed last week with systems integrator MicroAge Technology Services and other IT vendors.

John Kelley, director of the Arizona Government Information Technology Agency, says the deal combines multivendor contracts and lowers Arizona's total cost of IT ownership by reducing the number of IT contractors the state hires. The contract also helps the agency overcome the dearth of IT talent and get the level of service it requires. "For the first time, we'll be monitoring the service levels that contractors provide to make sure we're getting the service we need," Kelley says.

As part of the three-year agreement, valued at $50 million a year, services vendors CompUSA, Ikon, Inacom, and MicroAge will provide Acer, Apple, Compaq, Dell, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, NEC, Panasonic, and Toshiba desktop and server hardware--as well as software, services, and support--to state agencies. MicroAge will also provide a dedicated toll-free number for agencies to call for computer-related needs.

This is the third services contract between MicroAge and Arizona. The systems integrator recently upgraded personal computers as part of the Arizona Department of Transportation's year 2000 compliance initiatives and provided technology to support the department's Freeway Management System, which monitors traffic conditions. MicroAge is also combining databases and database-management programs in the state's criminal justice system and is involved in creating a telecommuting pilot program for the Arizona Department of Administration.
