  • Commerce One Inc. will add auction and reverse-auction capabilities to its MarketSite.net marketplace portal later this year. It also unveiled last week a new version of its BuySite procurement application with multilanguage support and a more decentralized architecture.

Commerce One will employ the auction features of Internet trading applications vendor TradingDynamics Inc. "Auctions and reverse auctions can change the procurement function from the fixed processes of today to something much more flexible--more like financial markets," says CEO Mark Hoffman.

MarketSite is the core technology of Global Trading Web, Commerce One's online business-to-business buying portal. BuySite is the front-end application that links to Global Trading Web.

BuySite 6.0, available in December, will be able to process transactions in English, German, French, and Japanese, and it supports international currencies, including the euro. The upgrade will also support central administration of purchasing for an enterprise with multiple business units that have different workflow rules and accounting codes. Its price ranges from $500,000 to $2.5 million.

Commerce One disclosed two new customers, messaging manage- ment provider Pitney Bowes Inc. and health-care systems maker OmniCell Technologies Inc. Pitney Bowes plans to roll out online procurement capability to 28,000 employee desktops. OmniCell will offer Web purchasing to about 600 hospitals that use its services.

Commerce One rival Ariba Inc. says American Honda Motor Co. will use its software and its Ariba.com buying portal for Web procurement.
