The Web has emerged as an important sales channel, and online applications, such as electronic procurement, can cut costs dramatically and improve the bottom line. But the Internet has also made the IT manager's job much more difficult. Internet technologies evolve rapidly, few standards have emerged, and many companies offering cutting-edge products are tiny and are losing money.
