ore companies are giving Internet billing a try. GTE, MCI WorldCom, and Mobil Oil already offer an online bill-payment service. And Chase Manhattan Bank, which has a program aimed at letting consumers view and pay their credit-card bills online, plans to offer the same service to its business customers next year.Chase selected BlueGill Technologies Inc. to provide the software that will take billing data from the bank's legacy systems and present it on the Web. BlueGill's i-Banker software gives Chase tools to customize bills according to each company's preferences.
GTE, MCI WorldCom, and Mobil use TransPoint LLC's technology and services, which let customers view and pay bills online via TransPoint's Web site or the Microsoft Network. TransPoint is owned by Citigroup, First Data, and Microsoft.
"Our customers have been asking for this for more than a year," says Sara Jordan, marketing manager of consumer-card products at Mobil, which is offering online-billing options to those who use the company's private-label credit cards. In addition, she says, "We should be able to take some of the costs out of the statements processes."
