ilverStream Software Inc. last week unveiled the latest release of its namesake application server with new technology for building and deploying Java-based Internet, extranet, and E-commerce applications. The software will enter beta testing this month and is expected to be generally available early next year.SilverStream 3.0 supports the Java 2 Enterprise Edition specification, an industry standard for developing Java-based server applications, and the Java Server Pages standard for creating dynamic Web pages.
ADC Telecommunications Inc. in Minneapolis is using SilverStream 2.5, the current version of the application server, to create an online catalog for its broadband telecommunications hardware and software products; to publish marketing content to its Web site; and as a platform for its SAP R/3 enterprise resource planning applications.
Arun Singh, E-commerce program manager, says ADC will probably upgrade to version 3.0 sometime next spring, citing its support for the Enterprise JavaBeans specification as a particularly attractive feature. He plans to leverage the technology to give ADC customers access to ADC's invoice, billing, and other systems.
SilverStream 3.0 also gives developers the option to use Java development tools from other vendors and offers new, high-availability features such as load balancing and failover. Also added is a management console, distributed application debugging capability, and improved database connectivity.
The SilverStream application server, developer edition, is expected to be priced at $2,500 for a five-developer version. The deployment version for Unix and Windows NT will start at $15,000 per CPU.
