he flourishing field of online IT recruitment provides more exposure for job seekers and employers--if they have a focused plan of attack. Consider that the latest recruitment site to debut, TechOpps.com, posts up to 75,000 resumés.CareerMosaic unveiled TechOpps. com last week, after weeks of testing. TechOpps.com also posts career advice, industry news, surveys, and links to career-development and employer sites.
Toby Northcoat-Smith, an IT professional who recently moved from England to the United States, used TechOpps.com to land a job last month as project leader for business technology services at KPMG. "I'm responsible for getting new products developed and out to the field," he says. "I'm absolutely over the moon about what I'm doing."
However, Northcoat-Smith found that he had to do more than just post his resumé at TechOpps.com to find the right job. "I only got a couple of responses from having the resumé dormant on the site," he says.
So Northcoat-Smith took an active role and applied for jobs posted at TechOpps.com. Within 10 days, he started his new job.
Both employers and job seekers need to verify that posted jobs and resumés are for active searches. "Sites like this are trying to attract purely by quantity of information," says Neal Frankel, VP at RHI Consulting. "They don't pull the older stuff, so the information becomes stale. Another weakness is that you can search on keywords, but you can't establish criteria."
But Rob Lovell, MIS manager for Nationwide Homes in Martinsville, Va., viewed the site and says it could help with IT talent searches. "I can see where it could reduce cost and time," he says.
Since TechOpps.com doesn't screen job seekers, employers should ensure that the people looking for jobs are legitimate IT professionals. TechOpps.com is free to job seekers, but employers pay fees to access the site.
