Office Depot Inc. this week will unveil a partnership with E-business software provider Trilogy Software Inc. that will let the office-supply superstore resell Trilogy's Buying Chain business-to-business software to small and midsize companies.

This partnership will let Office Depot provide small and midsize business customers with a full set of business-to-business capabilities, says Vernon Keenan, an analyst for market-research firm KeenanVision. "Buying Chain lets users manage the content on their site and makes it easy to manage procurement functions like work flow and the authorization process," Keenan says.

Office Depot already offers Web hosted services to its small and midsize business customers; the Trilogy partnership marks the first time it will sell software to this market. Buying Chain will extend Office Depot's business-to-business E-commerce and E-procurement capabilities currently offered to customers through its Web site. Under the agreement, Office Depot will resell Trilogy's Buying Chain software as an Office Depot-branded product and will add its product catalog to Trilogy's network of suppliers.

Trilogy develops and markets business software for large companies, including Alltel, Nortel Networks, and Whirlpool. Its products provide customers with purchasing rules that can be assigned to keep track of procurement. Once users install the software, they have access to catalogs and links to other Buying Chain suppliers.

IT Marketing Corp., a marketing company in Austin, Texas, has been using Trilogy's Buying Chain software for about six months. The company chose it over online business-to-business marketplaces because of Buying Chain's robust features and ease of use, president and CEO Jeff Ross says. "It took only three days to get up and running and is a great service that allows us to view all of our suppliers and vendors in one place while tracking the products we purchase and when they were delivered," Ross says.

Pricing for Trilogy's Buying Chain software from Office Depot starts at $999.
