Plug-And-Play Backup
CMS Peripherals has unveiled a new version of its Automatic Backup System for notebook users. The USB backup device delivers up to 1.5 Mbytes per second of performance, offering Windows 98 and Windows 2000 users a stable, high-data throughput for backup, additional storage, and file recovery. The USB interface makes the solution hot-pluggable for desktop and notebook PCs. The units mount and launch backups automatically, as soon as they�re connected. For mobile users, a key benefit will be the ability to back up data while on the road and share it with a desktop computer. Available in capacities of 6, 12, and 18 Gbytes for the notebook, as well as 13- and 27-Gbyte capacities for the desktop. Price: Starts at $389.

Event Monitor
Opalis EventMonitor is software that provides real-time, in-depth monitoring, notification, and reporting of essential Windows NT and 2000 resources. Its Web interface adds greater control over resources, letting administrators monitor network events remotely. Administrators can set up user-defined filters to extract system information. They can be alerted via E-mail of critical problems, while instructing the system to log low-priority data into a central Open Database Connectivity or SQL database for statistical analysis. The Web interface lets administrators access system information from any computer with a Web browser. Price: $349.

Cracking Network Design
NetCracker Technology has unveiled new versions of NetCracker Professional and NetCracker Designer that come in client-server and standalone applications. New features include an IP planner, import from HP OpenView�s Network Node Manager, import from Visio, and whiteboard mode. The Simple Network Management Protocol programs bring in not only network polling data, but all device parameters stored in the database of more than 20,000 voice, video, and data devices. Polling recognizes each device and pulls information from the database into the network layout. Price: Professional is $9,995; Designer is $1,995.
