Chiefs Of The Year:
Even On Sabbatical Spots, Schwab Execs Think Alike
harles Schwab & Co. CIO Dawn Lepore and co-CEO David Pottruck are so in sync that without consulting each other beforehand, they even chose the same place--Nantucket--for their sabbaticals last summer.
Lepore went to the Massachusetts island for two weeks in July, Pottruck went there in August. "My fantasy was to spend my time building sandcastles on the beach with my 2-year-old son, and we made it come true," Lepore says. She and her family also spent a week in Hawaii; Pottruck and his wife added visits to California's Napa Valley and the Colorado mountains.
The two executives shared another interest on their respective breaks: very, very filtered E-mail. Both wanted to stay in touch with friends and "get the latest good jokes," Pottruck says, but neither wanted to see work-related messages. Pottruck set up separate Yahoo E-mail accounts for personal E-mail; Lepore had her assistant screen her in-box and only forward her the good stuff. "Otherwise," she says, "it's not a sabbatical."
