You'd think that high-tech executives, immersed in technology at the office, would opt for technological simplicity beyond the company walls. Think again. The execs featured on these pages have rigged their lives with the latest and greatest in high-tech tools-from a Dick Tracyesque wristwatch to a firewall that protects the family Ethernet.

ow that Dan Whaley has retired from GetThere Inc., the Internet travel-services company he founded in 1995, he's put all the high-tech gizmos he's ever dreamed of into his San Mateo, Calif., home. "I'm permanently and irreparably in love with the latest technological innovations," Whaley says. "I love music, I love to mix records and house music, to get people together and have a good time. And now I can."
He's created the ideal party infrastructure. A full disc-jockey setup is embedded in his kitchen counters, with turntables, CD burners, and a mixer connected to an audio and video Internet server. The living room has a home-theater system with a high-definition television projector, an 84-inch screen, and a five-channel speaker setup. When the Internet is the source of the entertainment du jour, a high-speed connection from @Home provides instant access. Going outside to sit on the dock by his lake? No worries: It's wired for sound. All of Whaley's gadgets are networked.
Still, Whaley's favorite "toy" weighs in at barely four pounds. His Fujitsu S-series Lifebook goes with him from room to room. "It's the most amazing thing I have."
