Entrust Technologies Inc. and JetForm Corp. have teamed to integrate digital certificates with Web-based forms using standard Web-browser software.

The approach eliminates the need to download special applications or browser plug-ins for users who want to add digital certificates to Web forms, says Andrew Warzecha, a VP at research firm Meta Group. "Companies don't want to deal with additional online and offline support or the maintenance nightmares of plug-ins," he says.

The combination of JetForm's ReachForm XML-based electronic form software with Entrust's TruePass Web security software will increase the security and authentication capabilities of ReachForm applications, including the ability to provide legally binding digital signatures and a verifiable way to track online transactions, the companies say.

The ReachForm software is certified Entrust-Ready, which means it has passed functionality testing and is secure. When it becomes available in April, Entrust's customers can opt to manage their own certificate authority or outsource. In addition, ReachForm will also be compatible with the Entrust.net Signature ID Service, which is expected to be available by March.

The public digital signature Web portal service will let customers get digital certificates for authentication and digital signatures. "ReachForm customers will be able to build applications that enable secure data collection from any machine with a standard Web browser," says Sydney Sloan, director of product marketing for JetForm.

"Digital signatures are the killer app" for public key infrastructure technology, says Pete Lindstrom, an analyst with the Hurwitz Group. "I've been telling these companies to buy a form-flow company. That's where we see the benefits of PKI shine."

Pricing for Entrust TruePass varies; a midsize deployment is about $10 per seat. ReachForm is $75,000 per server.
