Amazon.com Inc. joined the Internet search business last week, launching its own search site, A9.com, through a Silicon Valley subsidiary. The site licenses Web-search results from Google Inc., but there are some differences. The site, perhaps not surprisingly, also searches the text of Amazon's vast store of books, maintains a list of a user's search history, and allows the annotation of Web pages using A9's browser toolbar. A company spokeswoman says A9 is developing E-commerce search technology for Amazon and other sites.
