Users of Gmail from around the globe are reporting that the service isn't accessible. Google is promising a fix soon.
As of 1pm Pacific Time on Tuesday, Gmail was down and its users have turned to the #googlefail channel on Twitter to grouse about it.
The Google Apps Status Dashboard is showing a service outage. At the time this article was filed, trying to visit http://mail.google.com returned a server error.
In Google's Gmail forum, users claiming to be in Italy, Germany, France, and Taiwan, along with users from various states in the U.S., report being unable to access Gmail.
At 12:53pm PT, Google posted the following: "We're aware of a problem with Google Mail affecting a majority of users. The affected users are unable to access Google Mail. We will provide an update by September 1, 2009 1:53:00 PM UTC-7 detailing when we expect to resolve the problem. Please note that this resolution time is an estimate and may change."
Gmail also reported limited outages on August 31.
A Google spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for further information.
On May 14, Gmail was down for about an hour. A limited number of users were affected by a 20 minute outage on May 8.
In February, Google apologized for a significant Gmail outage and extended account subscriptions for Google Apps Premier customers for 15 days, as per the Gmail service-level agreement. Other notable Gmail outages occurred last year in April, August, and October.
Last month, Google's Gmail has surpassed AOL as the third most visited e-mail service in the U.S.
Update: As of 2:37pm PT, Google says the issue has been fixed. The outage, a Google spokesperson said in an e-mail, "lasted for approximately one hour and forty-five minutes. During that period, users could continue to send and receive email using POP and IMAP, and access their old mail using Gmail offline."
