AT&T Intros Moto Q Smartphone With Global Roaming

The smartphone can be used in more than 135 countries for e-mail and Internet access and in more than 190 countries to make or receive phone calls.

AT&T on Thursday announced that Motorola's 3G-enabled Moto Q 9h smartphone will be available to the carrier's customers in the United States starting this week.

The Moto Q 9h, or the Moto Q global as AT&T calls it, has the ability to access high-speed cellular data networks through its built-in 3G technology and it's the first Moto Q smartphone sold in the U.S. with worldwide capabilities, according to AT&T.

Motorola's earlier Moto Q model was first introduced in the U.S. through Verizon Wireless last May. Motorola had hoped to challenge Research In Motion's popular BlackBerry with its new smartphone, which sports an ultra-thin design, multimedia capabilities, and an attractive price tag of less than $200. The Moto Q from Verizon Wireless has 3G capabilities as well, but it doesn’t have global roaming capabilities for traveling users that want to take the smartphone overseas.

The Moto Q 9h incorporates quad-band EDGE technology that works around the world. The smartphone can be used in more than 135 countries for e-mail and Internet access and in more than 190 countries to make or receive phone calls. With 3G, users can achieve potential download speeds of up to 3.6 Mbps on AT&T's UMTS/ HSDPA BroadbandConnect network. The high-speed network spans across more than 200 major metropolitan areas in the U.S.

The smartphone uses Microsoft's latest Windows Mobile 6 operating system, which includes Direct Push Technology for automatic delivery of e-mails from Exchange servers to the smartphone. Users get an additional e-mail with Motorola's Good Mobile Messaging.

Motorola's initial Moto Q model had several limitations, particularly the omission of the full Mobile Office Suite, making it impossible to create and edit documents. The Moto Q 9h solves that problem by offering full Office capabilities.

Other features include Opera Software's advanced mobile browser, Documents to Go for document editing, seven shortcut keys, a 2.0-megapixel camera with flash, and built-in GPS. AT&T is providing two location-based services that take advantage of the smartphone's GPS capabilities: TeleNav GPS Navigator for turn-by-turn voice and on-screen driving directions and TeleNav Track for managing mobile workforces.

The Moto Q 9h offers the right blend of business functionality -- in terms of accessing applications and enterprise e-mail systems -- and entertainment. For example, it comes with My Q Paks, a suite of third-party application bundles created by software developers as part of Motorola's developer network.

The smartphone will be available from AT&T in the U.S. starting November 2 for an introductory price of $200 with a two-year subscription.
