Audible Delivers Newspapers And More Over RSS

Audible starts using RSS feeds to automatically deliver the latest audio editions of The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and other periodicals to subscribers' computers.

Audible Inc. said it started using on Friday RSS feeds for automatic delivery of the latest audio editions of The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and other periodicals to subscribers' computers.

RSS, or really simple syndication, is an XML-based technology used by content publishers to distribute updates and new material. The content is delivered either as a headline and link, or in full, to special software called readers. RSS also is being used to deliver audio content, called podcasts, to readers such as iPodder, Doppler, NewsGator, FeedDemon and NetNewsWire.

"(RSS) will automatically deliver Audible content to your computer when its updated," David Joseph, spokesman for the company, said.

Before adding the latest service, subscribers could only get Audible content in their Apple Computer iPod or other digital music player through the company's software, which a subscriber downloads from the Audible web site to a computer.

The RSS feature will now automatically deliver Audible content to RSS readers that support podcasts, which can then be downloaded to the iPod or Windows Media-based players.

Besides the Times and Journal, Audible will deliver audio versions of Forbes Magazine and other periodicals. In addition, the service includes updates of broadcasts from MSNBC, the BBC News Hour, The World, and more.

Audible has distributed audio versions of books, magazines, newspapers and other content since 1997. The Wayne, N.J., company plans to introduce later this year tools that podcasters, individuals that create audio content for music players, can use to distribute their programs through Audible, Joseph said.
