Authorities Blamed For Communications Networks' Failure Under Katrina's Attack

The flooding of New Orleans and its chaotic evacuation created an enduring calamity that may leave electricity and communications offline for the rest of the year, at least. Pundits blame failures of technology and bureaucracy. But, given the severity of the disaster (President Bush called it the worst natural catastrophe since San Francisco was destroyed by earthquake and fire in 1906), is that fair?

Wi-Fi: Who Says You Can't Take It With You?

Zeewaves Systems Inc., a startup here working with Nvidia Corp. on planar-antenna Wi-Fi designs, has developed a mobile Wi-Fi architecture that can combine vehicular hotspots with such functions as global-positioning system, automatic vehicle location and ZigBee sensor gateways.

Cisco Combines RFID Location Tools With Wi-Fi

The Wireless Location Appliance 2700 is a $14,995 1U box that integrates RFID tagging with 802.11 access points, enabling ways for central managers to locate and control assets. The system can be used in conjunction with voice-over-IP infrastructure, but works best when VoIP has been extended to a voice-over-Wi-Fi environment.

XM's Parent To Offer Broadband, Push-To-Talk Service

Mobile Satellite Ventures, the parent company of XM Radio, will expand the digital audio broadcast network to support two-way voice and broadband data service, MSV senior vice president Lon Levin said Tuesday at a National Space Symposium panel on emerging satellite services.
