Even though big data has the potential to unlock vast troves of strategic insight, it's still a victim of the silo effect that large organizations have. 

That's too bad. This isn't a technology problem as much as it is a people problem. I wish I know the answer to quandaries like this, but this is why IBM is working on the problem.

Management often continues to use old-fashioned rewards for teams that use new technologies. If you award bonuses to the one team that appears to find an answer or locate savings or efficiencies, etc., it's not surprising that all teams will hoard knowledge, not share data, or use alternate tried-and-true means rather than new tools that may require additional training. Management should also consider new rewards -- perhaps comp time or a company-wide reward (weekend get-together, corporate-wide bonuses, after-hours party, catered lunch, etc.), rather than singling out a handful of people. When everyone wins once a goal is hit, then everyone pitches in to deliver on the goal.

Interesting article. I think this usd to be referred to as "politics": I don't want to talk to X because I don't want either:

a. To give anyone else credit for my idea

b. Risk getting wrong information from a rival


And that's a result of managers pitting groups (and even employees) against each other.

I am really not sure if Big Data has trust problem but yes to me i would say it has understading problem, no gets interested in reading long reports through window pane and that was the reason behind to introduce Big Data to enable customer churn big amount of data and analyze it but analysis itself is very lenthy, the more refined request from customer today says give me intelligent data not big data...

Competence Builds Trust
Trust is about being willing to share information, but it's also about confidence in the results from analytics. Nationwide addresses some of that by insisting the business analysts know the logic that's going into code and that coders know the business rationales -- provides one check-and-balance. If execs are going to make really big bets on analytics, they need faith that analytics systems are competent to kick out the right answers.
