Interesting to see how the value of data can be calculated in concrete terms. this data does go through a third party and can be scrubbed. there is no particular reason that individual customer data needs to be evaluated (though of course, privacy is an issue). What I find interesting is the relatively high (or low) value of the data. Most records are valued at 1 cent to 2 cents each, according to a report cited in a McKinsey piece I read recently. If 'insights' become like google Adwords, we should expect to see a continuum of values, some of which will be worth dollars and tens of dollars (and perhaps more).

It is amazing to me that people sell their privacy so very cheaply...
The data is anonymized schtick is a crock.  There is nothing anonymous about GPS location, mobile phone make/model.  Too many consumers are blissfully ignorant of their privacy and very eager to sell it cheaply to a corporate entity like Tata that makes millions selling their info.

If the data is limited to GPS location and phone make/model, I'm not convinced there's a significant privacy risk.  The location is tied to the gas station making the offer, so all those devices will be in close proximity. If I'm sharing my MEID, phone number or other type of PII, either by choice or not, that's an entirely different issue in my opinion.
