Modular EMC Appliance Handles Multiple Data Types
EMC acquired Greenplum in 2010, and it wasted no time in developing an EMC Greenplum Data Computing Appliance (DCA) combining EMC storage hardware and replication and recovery options with Greenplum's massively parallel processing (MPP) database. EMC's Data Computing Division is expanding on Greenplum's deep support for in-database analytics with partners including SAS and MapR.

EMC introduced its own distribution of Hadoop software in May, and a Modular DCA set for release this fall promises to support the Greenplum SQL/relational database as well as Hadoop deployments on the same appliance. With Hadoop, EMC addresses analysis of truly big data like clickstreams and unstructured data such as social-network comments. The Modular DCA will also support high-capacity storage modules on the same appliance for long-term retention of records to meet regulatory mandates.

For data analytics software I would recommend Caseware's IDEA software. For more information visit their UK distributors at www.auditware.co.uk

If there's one vendor I could add after the fact, it would be Actian (formerly Ingres). The Ingres database figures in data warehousing, but this company it pursuing high-scale analytics with its newer Vectorwise database. Gartner ranks it as a challenger and the customer ranks are growing. I hope to follow up soon with a customer case example. Also check the TCP-H rankings, as Actian says they've blown the doors off previous records. -- Doug Henschen

re: 12 Top Big Data Analytics Players
Analytic's software is so important nowadays - data typically doubles every 18 months and with real-time information being requested at all times it doesn't surprise me how competitive the environment is, and thankfully there is some great software out there.

Thanks for the article

I didn't really need this article anyways. Took a look out of curiosity. Finding a 'Slide Show', I just left this note for anyone that may care, and dumped it.
