Basecamp & Campfire
Basecamp delivers intuitive online project management and collaboration for groups. It includes a variety of easy-to-use dashboard, deadline management, file sharing, and communication tools. Campfire takes the fundamentals of instant messaging and super-sizes them for larger groups, enabling real-time communication and file-sharing (including image support) among team members. Saved chat transcripts function like your own digital meeting minutes, easily reviewed and shared with the team. Both platforms are developed by 37 Signals, so they work well in tandem and are highly suitable for distributed teams. The 37 Signals mobile strategy is shifting away from the app paradigm, however. The company says it's investing in optimizing its HTML5-based display in mobile browsers on iPad and other devices. While Campfire already offers a free native iPhone app--there are premium third-party apps for iPad, too--37 Signals will put its future development efforts behind mobile browser optimization, good news for enterprise teams collaborating on a variety of devices and operating systems. In fact, both Basecamp ($9.99) and Campfire (free) already both work quite well in an iPad browser--but the continued investment in optimal mobile performance and functionality is good sign of things to come.
