Hadoop may be 10 years old, but that doesn't necessarily mean that most enterprises have embraced and made the most of big data technologies yet. InformationWeek recently caught up with Bill Schmarzo, CTO for big data services at EMC to chat about the state of big data in the enterprise.

This podcast marks the second edition of InformationWeek's Expert Voice. In this new podcast series, InformationWeek editors talk with executives, consultants, and experts in areas that matter to IT professionals who want to build their skills and advance their careers.

In this episode, InformationWeek Senior Editor Jessica Davis interviews Schmarzo, who is also a frequent industry speaker, a blogger, an instructor, and an author. Schmarzo wrote Big Data MBA: Driving Business Strategies with Data Science Big and Big Data: Understanding How Data Powers Big Business.

Schmarzo also spends plenty of time in the field with EMC's enterprise customers and has an up-close view of some of the problems and challenges today's enterprises are encountering as they implement big data strategies and technologies.

We spoke to Schmarzo recently about what he's seeing at enterprise shops. What are the trends for these organizations when it comes to big data? What are some of the issues they are struggling with in the current environment as so many traditional companies are feeling the push to go digital? What are some of the hot technologies on the horizon?

Schmarzo responded to all those questions. He also told InformationWeek about one of the newer technologies that is at top of mind for enterprises: the internet of things (IoT), which generates huge volumes of data for IT organizations to manage and analyze.

The theme for InformationWeek's Expert Voice is "Parasite" by Lamprey.
