Protect offers three main functions -- the ability fo find lost devices, the ability to protect the data and the ability to backup and restore data. Finding lost devices means actually finding it on a map, using the device GPS, making the phone ring loudly, or displaying a message on the device, say for telling someone who might have found it what you'd like them to do.
