9 Reasons Enterprises Shouldn’t Switch To Hyper-V

Posted by Elias Khnaser @ 03:09 PM ET | Dec 16, 2009

In my job I’m privileged to help companies navigate virtualization challenges. Lately, more and more enterprise IT groups are asking about migrating to Hyper-V because of perceived significant cost savings, from a licensing perspective. I always expected that at some point I would have to address this question, but I thought that time would be two or three years from now.

Bruce Perens's GPL Beef

Those who egregiously violate open source software licensing agreements, like the GPL, are targets for legal action that's just as vigilant as those that defend proprietary software. But the most recent round of GPL legal action comes with a curious twist.

Verizon Wi-Fi Program Bypasses Smartphone Users

Posted by Ed Hansberry @ 12:03 AM ET | Dec 16, 2009

Verizon has a new WiFi hotspot program where any of its "Mobile Broadband" customers get free access to hotspots across the country. The advantage is for the same price you were paying yesterday, you can now transfer more data without worrying about the typical 5GB per month limit since none of the hotspot transfers count against your monthly limit. The bad news is, being a Verizon smartphone owner doesn't get you any of these benefits.

When Controllers Fail

What are the chances of a controller failing in a storage system? I don’t know the exact statistic but its safe to assume that its pretty low. When they do fail, the ramifications can be extreme, especially in the increasingly virtualized data center that counts on shared storage. Active-Active controllers provide the protection from controller failure but they are a bit of a misnomer. Both controllers are being used but they are assigned to specific workloads.
