Works In Progress

Posted by , Aug 2, 2004 04:11 PM

InformationWeek editors are looking into a number of stories this week, including what's going on at the LinuxWorld Conference, the role of IT in Procter & Gamble's big rise in earnings, and the implications of the upgraded terror alert.

Wide World Of Linux
Linux will be a hot topic this week, as LinuxWorld gets underway in San Francisco and SCO hosts its user conference in Las Vegas. In addition to expected announcements from IBM, there's now word that Sun Microsystems is interested in Novell, which owns SuSE Linux, even as it ponders the future of its own operating system, possibly on an open-source platform.

IT Pays Off For P&G

Procter & Gamble has ridden IT efficiency to a 44% increase in profits. We take a look at the IT strategy IT strategy being used by the maker of many of the world's favorite consumer products. P&G director of infrastructure Linda Clement Holmes provides insight on the company's IT strategy and programs.

Orange Alert

Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge has elevated the nationwide terror alert status from yellow to orange for the financial-services sector. Among the interesting questions: Will the specific threat as outlined now cause the companies to raise internal threat alerts that cause them to put into practice policies they've outlined for emergencies--e.g. 24-hour all IT-personnel on call, or archiving more times a day than usual.
