For Believers In The IT Profession, Time To Speak Up

Posted by Chris Murphy, Sep 30, 2005 05:34 PM

Leaders of U.S. businesses that depend on IT, if they do indeed believe in the IT profession, need to put more effort toward the tech-talent pipeline. It's not just that IT-related college enrollments are down sharply (they are). IT leaders need to admit how big a cloud outsourcing is casting over IT, and how the profession is losing its image for both lucre and cool, even as young people embrace technology like never before.

InformationWeek publishes an article this week that takes the point of view that there's a lot of promise ahead in the IT profession. Far from a universally held belief, to be sure, and there's been plenty of passionate discussion of the topic on this blog. There's incredible havoc hitting people's lives as the U.S. IT industry loses programming jobs, even as it creates jobs in the broad categories of IT management, networking, and database administration, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics surveys.

But I try to make another point in the article: That the people who do believe in the IT profession, and the companies that depend on IT, can't take the tech-talent pipeline for granted in this environment, and need to do more to encourage talented young people to explore technology careers. This blog is here for others to take over the discussion of that notion.
