A GNew Version of GNOME

I confess I'm writing this item just so I could use that headline. Well, no, I'm not either, because the new version of GNOME, the open-source Linux graphical desktop, is news all on its own. The second beta of what will be GNOME 2.14 slipped out last week, and release is scheduled for March 15.

Of course, if you're into Linux and GNOME you already knew that. If you're one of the Linux true believers GNOME isn't gnews (sorry). But if you're a Linux tire-kicker, maybe this will push you into actually trying something. Start with Davyd Madeley's very nice visual tour of the new version and go for the downloads.

Yeah, that's "downloads" plural. It's a do-it-yourself project — exactly the sort of test that separates Linux-heads from any kind of mass market. If you're willing to compile your own desktop to run on top of a separately installed OS, Linux is for you. If you didn't understand the previous sentence you're running Windows XP, aren't you?
