Meet Your New Spouse: The PC

Just in time for Valentine's Day hype, a new survey claims that 65% of US consumers over the age of 18 spend more time with their computers than with their spouses or significant others. Talk about tech love.

Here are some highlights from the study:

The average consumer has experienced computer troubles eight times — about every four months — over the last three years.

The average American wastes 12 hours a month — the equivalent of half a weekend — due to home computer problems.

A majority of Americans (52%) describe their most recent experience with a computer problem as one of anger, sadness or alienation.

Some experts even claim that "computer problems sometimes cause emotional distress, similar to what happens when problems occur between spouses."

What's even more interesting is that this study does NOT appear to cover mobile devices like smartphones and PDAs. If we factor in how much time many professionals now spend on their BlackBerry handhelds, I wonder how much more time we spend with technology than with our "real" loves.
