WebEx Lets You Access Your PC Through Your Mobile Phone

Posted by Eric Zeman, Mar 5, 2007 02:29 PM

Everyone probably knows how frustrating it is to be stuck out of the office without access to a vital file that's sitting on your home or work PC. It's even more frustrating when you're on the go and there's no way to dial into your company's VPN. Looking to keep you from pulling your hair out, a new partnership between WebEx and SoonR will allow you to use your mobile phone's browser to get into your PC remotely. Some of the nifty features include transferring files, printing and searching your desktop.

The software, called WebEx PCNow 3.0, claims to be the first remote access solution to support both PC-to-PC and phone-to-PC access. If you think it sounds like mighty powerful enterprise software is at work here, requiring the latest smartypants phone, you'd be wrong. The solution should permit some 1 billion browser-enabled handsets to log in, see and access calendars, documents, emails and other files on home or work computers. The combined offering does not require expensive devices or additional downloads.

“The days of lugging laptops through the airport are over. All your PC documents and email are now as close as your mobile phone,” said Jack Chawla, senior director of product management, WebEx. As much as everyone likes to tout that their product is a laptop replacement solution, it's probably best to reserve judgment until you've had a chance to test the software out for yourself.

Though the product is available to most phones and will work across the different wireless carriers, network speed and your phone's capabilities will likely affect the overall experience.

PCNow 3.0 is available today at $11.95 per month for two PCs. You can sign up here for a free 30-day trial.
