Yahoo Releases Microsoft Mobile Version Of Its Go Platform

Posted by Eric Zeman, Mar 7, 2007 03:15 PM

It couldn't have a more unwieldy name: Yahoo Go for Mobile 2.0 for Windows Mobile. Whatever it's called, the mobile search platform rife with widgets and quick access to local information is now available to users of select Windows Mobile devices.

Yahoo Go for Mobile was released to some mild fanfare two months ago at CES. Since its release, it's already undergone several new iterations and was recently updated to version 2.0. Yahoo has brought the latest version to the Windows Mobile platform today.

The software is a portal of sorts that can be customized for just about any locale and provides one-click access to services ranging from Web search, e-mail, maps, and local information to Flickr photo sharing. Yahoo's goal is to make finding Web-based information as easy on phones as it is sitting at a computer. When I used Yahoo Go recently to check for a local pizza joint, it supplied me with more than 100 results, the closest 10 of which were very relevant to my search.

As part of the announcement, Yahoo is teaming with Taiwan's High Tech Computer and will preload the software on its Windows Mobile devices going forward. HTC supplies operator-branded Windows Mobile devices to carriers around the world, including the Tier 1 carriers in the US. The service will be available to about 175 different Windows Mobile devices.

"Consumers have been clamoring for us to bring Yahoo Go 2.0 to Windows Mobile devices since we launched the service less than two months ago," said Marco Boerries, senior VP of connected life at Yahoo. "There are millions of mobile phones on the Windows Mobile platform in the market today and consumers with these devices want to use the most advanced, exciting services available. Our innovative Yahoo Go 2.0 service finally brings the open Internet to the mobile phone and gives consumers the compelling experience they have been looking for."
