Getting My Hands On An iPhone -- I Hope

What are you doing this weekend? As I write this, it's Friday morning, and I'm hoping I'll be working this weekend, posting image galleries and writing reviews of the iPhone. Of course, to do that, I need to get my hands on an iPhone.

So, Friday at 5:45 pm, 15 minutes before the iPhone goes on sale, I plan to grab my wee small PowerBook, credit card, and a printout of locations of local Apple and AT&T stores. I'll make sure my GPS is charged up, and hit the road on a search for a store that will sell me an iPhone. I'll blog my adventures on InformationWeek's Mac blog. -- that's why I'm bringing the PowerBook, so I can blog from nearby Wi-Fi hotspots.

I expect I will be able to buy an iPhone Friday night. Despite the stories of people lining up days in advance to buy an iPhone, my gut feeling is that, if you want to go to bed Friday night with an iPhone under your pillow, you'll be able to do that without much trouble. So I haven't been paying anyone to stand in line for me or to cause a diversion so I can cut to the front of the queue..

I am doing one trick to improve my odds: I work from a home office in a town called La Mesa, Calif. It's right on the San Diego city limits. If I drive west, I quickly reach the city -- San Diego, which is just crawling with Mac enthusiasts. If I drive east, I arrive just as quickly in horse-farming country and desert. So I'm going to head east first in search of my iPhone; I figure if you have a horse (or are one), chances are you aren't interested enough in an iPhone to line up Friday night to buy one.

Once I get the iPhone -- assuming I do -- I'll head straight home and, of course, I'll take it out of the box right away. And I'll take unboxing photos, too, and we'll run an image gallery of that as soon as we can get the images posted.

Then, when that's done, I'll roll up my sleeves and start evaluating the iPhone. I'll write my review, create another image gallery, and hopefully get the whole thing posted by Sunday or first thing Monday morning.
