I've got my eye out for applications for the iPhone. These are Web sites that have been optimized for the phone's tiny display and AJAX implementation. Read on for bookmarks to apps that find cheap gas near you, locate movie times, and even a full-fledged word-processing, spreadsheet, and presentation suite.

My personal favorite, PocketTweets is Twitter for your iPhone.

goMovies finds movie times and locations by zip code. I tried it out, it works.

Gas.app helps you find cheap gas in your area. This one looks sweet: Enter your zip code, and it lists nearby gas stations with cheap prices. Tap one of the selections, and you go to the built-in iPhone Maps application, where you can see a map of the location, get driving directions, find a phone number, find nearby businesses, and other functions.

Zoho has the iZoho office suite for the iPhone. It connects to the company's online office suite. You can view and edit word-processing documents, and view spreadsheets and presentations. I'm going to give this one a try myself; looks like it might be a workaround for what I think is the iPhone's biggest lack: You can't create a text document on the iPhone and synch it to your desktop. iPhone Chat lets you use AOL AIM instant message over the iPhone.

iActu displays the front pages of six newspapers, including the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and Wall Street Journal, and lets you view them in headline form. I found the interface clumsy. I think you're better off just going to the sites themselves, or a news aggregator like Yahoo News or -- my preference -- Google Reader

Speaking of Google Reader, I couldn't get the Google Reader iPhone Skin to work. These instructions make it look like it's more trouble than it's worth. Google Reader has an adequate mobile interface now, and I'll wait for an upgraded iPhone version.
