Employers Foiled, News Corp. To Offer Free Mobile MySpace

Whether you think MySpace is a time waster or a truly innovative social networking platform, it is now going to be available from mobile devices for free.

If your employer blocks employees from accessing MySpace, it is about to be foiled. Rank-and-file 9-to-5ers will now be able to check their MySpace messages, leave comments, peck out blogs, find new friends and change their mood all from their mobile phone. (And you thought you could keep them from wasting time at work by blocking the site! Ha!)

News Corp.'s Fox Interactive Media division unveiled its new strategy this morning, in which it will make access to some of its most popular sites, including MySpace, free. The sites will be supported by--what else?--mobile advertising.

"Accessing the Internet from a mobile phone will soon be as common as text messaging and voice calling, and it's FIM's goal to deliver these new free, ad-supported experiences as additional options for our users on top of our incredibly popular premium mobile services," said John Smelzer, Senior Vice President and GM of Mobile for Fox Interactive Media in a prepared statement.

Previously, MySpace users interested in keeping up with their online lives via mobile phones had to pay for the service. No word from AT&T or other providers offering the for-pay MySpace mobile access on how this will impact their existing agreements with MySpace.

The beta site will become available this week with advertising brought in by Millennial Media. What form the ads will take was not immediately revealed.
