OQO Boosts Model 02 Specs

Posted by Eric Zeman, Sep 10, 2007 10:40 AM

For lovers of the UMPC, good news. OQO revised some of the specs of its model 02 handtop computer, and they include faster processors and EV-DO Rev. A wireless data. Oh yeah, they also dropped the price to a totally low $1,299.

I've always been a fan of the OQO handtops. Full Windows functionality in a form factor small enough to fit into your pocket. While the original model 01 and 01+ were solid, they had some issues that were solved with the model 02 update. Now that model 02 has been around for more than half a year, OQO decided it was high time to make it even better.

The model 02 can include processors running up to 1.6Ghz and wireless data of the EV-DO Rev. A variety (from Sprint or Verizon Wireless). Perhaps the coolest new feature is the option to put a solid state drive in the model 02. You can stick with the original 120GB hard drive or pick the 32GB solid state hard drive. The solid state drive will offer somewhat improved battery life and some piece of mind with respect to stability. You will pay for that security, though.

While the entry-level model starts at an attractive $1,299, it is only equipped with a 40GB hard drive, 1.2GHz processor, 512MB of RAM and Windows XP. If you want Vista and better performance, you should expect to shell out $1,699 for a 60GB hard drive, 1.5GHz processor and 1GB of RAM. The model that includes the highest level of specs is in the neighborhood of $1,850, and the 32GB solid state drive commands a price premium of an additional $500.

Still. It's hard to argue with the high portability, connectivity and productivity enhancing benefits of such a powerful little PC.
