Are CIOs on top of all the blogs and wikis in their organizations? Microsoft's CIO says he is.

Stuart Scott, corporate VP and CIO of Microsoft -- you know, that software company -- says there are "a little over" 300,000 blogs, wikis, and Spaces inside his organization. He also says that search technology is the most popular way for people to tap into the information available within the company's expansive blogosphere.

Scott revealed that astounding number last night as part of the opening night presentation here at the InformationWeek 500 conference in Tucson, Ariz. Scott was joined on stage by Kevin Turner, Microsoft's chief operating officer, for an informal discussion led by InformationWeek editor John Foley.

The discussion was wide-ranging, exploring everything from the relationship between the COO and CIO, to the percent of resources devoted to maintenance versus application development, to the use of virtualization technology in Microsoft's IT architecture (it's extensive). But the 300,000 number jumped out at everyone.

My question is this: How would you know that you have 300,000 blogs and wikis in your organization? ( Spaces is a Microsoft blog technology.) And is this a good thing or a bad thing?

Do you know how many blogs and wikis there are in your organization? And is this the new corporate bragging point? My company has more blogs and wikis than yours does.
