Documentary Examines Mac Fanatics

Posted by Mitch Wagner, Feb 21, 2008 08:31 PM

An upcoming documentary interviews more than 50 "Macheads" in an unsuccessful attempt to figure out what makes the Mac inspire such loyal and fanatical devotion.

What is it about Apple products and the Mac in particular that inspires a fanatical, almost religious devotion among users?

The question has baffled marketers and others outside the Mac cult for years, so Kobi Shely and a band of documentary filmmakers went out seeking answers.

But I question the premise. Sure, Mac users are devoted -- but are they more devoted than Linux users? OS/2 users? Windows users? When you use a tool all day, every day, you develop a personal relationship with it. You either love it or hate it.

For myself, personally, sure, I love my Mac and iPhone, but I'd abandon them in a second if something better came along. I did it with PalmPilots; I used them for 11 years, from one of the first models to the Treo 640 smartphone. But when Palm ceased innovating, and the iPhone came along, I chucked the Treo and gladly switched, without a moment's hesitation or looking back. They're just products, they're not people or political movements or religion or sports teams.

I'd love to see a study on what it is about personal information technology in general that makes for such powerful feelings. Not just Macs, but all the hardware and software that people fall in love with. Maybe I'll write that one day.

Still, it looks like a good documentary. Watch the trailer.
