We just wrote about Appcelerator a month ago -- in fact, it was our Startup of the Week. But we got a chance to talk to CEO Jeff Haynie, who gives a great overview of what this company is doing: letting you build rich Internet applications quickly using standard technology like HTML/CSS on the front end and Ruby On Rails, Java, PHP, .Net and more on the back end.

Haynie says it will easily integrate into existing SOA architecture. Although there is a free version, for support and other services, there's a subscription fee for the commercial version.

One of the big competitors here is Adobe Flex Flash, but Haynie says that for Adobe's product you must develop in the proprietary MXML; moreover, Appcelerator is open source and uses standard languages. Adobe has announced it is making Adobe Flex Flash open source.
